Why Broker Valuations Are Often Inflated

Many business owners receive valuation ranges that sound great but do not match what real buyers can support.

That does not always mean the broker is dishonest. But the incentives are not perfectly aligned.

Why it happens

The problem with inflated expectations

If the asking price is too high, buyers stop taking the opportunity seriously. The business may sit on the market, lose momentum, and eventually require a price cut.

What matters more than asking price

The real question is not, “What could I list my business for?”

The better question is, “What would a serious buyer and lender actually support?”

A better starting point

Start with a grounded estimate based on cash flow, business risk, and buyer behavior. That gives you a more useful starting point than a fantasy number.
